The United States is full of prophecy students who are full of ideas. A large number of the ideas floating around are centered on the United States: many in the U.S. look at the world through an America-centric lens, especially when it comes to prophecy. I believe that the same is true of those who are teaching that the United States is the third temple. There are a few important passages of scripture which I would suggest that one take into consideration before taking a stance on this issue.

The Apostle John was told to measure the third temple, and the angel who spoke to him said, “but the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months” (Revelation 11:2). If the U.S. is the third temple that John measured, that would lead us to believe that the nation(s) outside of the borders of the U.S. would be considered the outer court. There is absolutely no scripture to support that claim. Moreover, according to John, the outer court is given to the gentiles, and they tread the holy city under foot for 1,260 days. The term “holy city” is used ten times in the Bible, it refers to Israel eight times and to the church twice.

Furthermore, the great tribulation begins in Judea after the antichrist stands in the third temple and claims to be God (Matthew 24:15-21; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4). Judea is presently known as the West Bank, and it is in Israel. For that reason, I believe that the third temple will be a building that will be constructed in Jerusalem. Thus, the third temple is a physical location, and there is no scriptural basis for the idea that the United States will be the third temple.

There are many interesting ideas floating around through prophecy circles. Some are insightful and scriptural, others are not so good. It is our responsibility as truth-bearers to be filters that distinguish truth from error. For that reason, it is my personal mission to expose error in any doctrine that I come across or uphold the truth in it, especially in matters that pertain to Bible prophecy. I hope that something that I wrote will be useful to you.
